a.What are the important objectives of this international organization? (e.g., to promote interactions/collaborations among scientists; to attract students (high school, undergraduate and graduate) to astrobiology; to increase the public awareness of astrobiology, etc) b. What venue should be taken to achieve the above objectives ? (e.g., organize regular scientific meetings of the Astrobiology Framework, workshops, [...]

Beyond the specific question asked, the proposal being discussed is a very ambitious one and raises some important questions, several of which have already been posed by Peter Gogarten. My personal view is that while origin of life research (the attention field of ISSOL) is an integral part of astrobiology, it is also a specialized (chemical/biochemical) subject which requires specialized communication channels. Therefore a practical question for me is the extent to which the suggested broad context of an inclusive conference could adequately address the need for ISSOL to hold its own conferences. Perhaps if federation meetings were to devote adequate time to ISSOL research topics each year, then the current triennial meeting of ISSOL could be replaced, but such details would remain to be determined.

The federation idea MAY help to overcome some of the current difficulties, but the list of member institutions really is a very mixed bag. NASA has been a key supporter of Origin of Life research and training, but do US federal agencies (NASA HQ, NAI) really want to be members of the federation? Did someone [...]

Further comments — My understanding of the agreement at the ad hoc meeting in Houston was to DISCUSS, not necessarily to actually FORM, a Framework/Union at a meeting held in conjunction with the Origins 2011 meeting in Montpellier, France in July 2011. Note that major issues for such a Union include 1. Funding. The NASA [...]

As President of Bioastronomy (IAU Commission 51), I have asked my Organizing Committee (equivalent to ISSOL’s EC) their ideas on what organizations should participate in the proposed discussions at Origins 2011 in Montpellier. As of now, the only reply that I have received states “Given the very early phase of this discussion, I would think [...]

During the Astrobiology Science Conference in Houston in April 2010, an impromptu and informal meeting was held to talk about developing a broad, inclusive International Astrobiology Framework/Union. The purpose of the Framework/Union would be to bring together and unite the international astrobiology community. The following ten people attended the meeting: Alan Boss, representing Bioastronomy/IAU Comm. [...]

Will there be a separate group for the EC discussions. Or are we using this group?
Peter, this group is for testing the venue. Everyone needs to discuss this, but I think that a new group should be made for each subject or agenda item that is to be discussed. That way the voting EC can review the discussions in that category. What do you think?
I think it might be better to have only one group for the EC, and to use threads for the different topics. Else we’ll have a proliferation of groups (and associated problems with usernames and passwords.
